Peter Gabriel had enjoyed a successful career with Genesis leaving just after the tour for the epic prog album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Post Genesis Gabriel established an eccentric solo career known for its experimental approach but that is not to say that he didn't enjoy hits there was Salisbury Hill and Games Without Frontiers, but in the publics mind he was known but not a star name in the same league as his former bandmate Phil Collins So would change all that.

You know certain songs have a better chance of getting on the radio when you do them, for sure, but I think part of the reason that ‘So’ works so well was that the band was really firing off each other and we had a great sound and production team. It was compact in the process and the way it was put together.
